What causes ARDS?
ARDS causes lung inflammation with the buildup of fluid in the air sacs called alveoli. The fluid decreases the ability of the lungs to expand and hence prevents enough oxygen from passing into the bloodstream. There is no specific reason for a person to develop ARDS. However, many trigger factors include pneumonia, a viral infection, breathing in stomach contents, lung injury, Oxygen toxicity, etc. It is often the result of organ failure, particularly with Sepsis.
